I recently wrote about how to create a custom Google Map showing your ancestors. Thinking about it I realised I’d only taken the first step and it would be worthwhile to figure out how to actually embed the map you created in a blog, in this case with WordPress. Naturally WordPress has an article on how to do this, however the instructions are out-of-date, so here is my alternative version.
Start of by opening up the map you created. On the top left hand side of the screen is the control box that you will need to use.
Now you need to change the sharing option to allow anyone to see the map. Click on and change who can access the map to “Public on the web – Anyone on the Internet can find and view”. Save your change and click on
.
Now you need to click on the three dots to the right of the Add Layer. This brings up an additional menu, as shown below.
This brings up a box, as shown blow, with the HTML you will need. Copy this code (select, right-click, copy).
Now just add the HTML code, to your WordPress blog. I’ve done this below. You will see that I’ve changed the actual map to use the Terrain map (click on Base map from the Google Map controls box and select you favourite from the 9 options).
